project based learning

We believe that the best way for students to learn is for them to use knowledge, inquiry, and creativity. This is why we have four major projects each year. The projects are school-wide events that are attended by hundreds of children, parents, and community members. See some samples below to get a better understanding of SMS DATA project-based learning.

PROJECT 1 - CHILDREN'S STORIES

Southeast Middle Magnet  students worked throughout the 1st 9 weeks to create stories to share. Students took topics from their classes that are difficult to understand and turned them into children's stories. The students were then able to use different apps to create illustrations for their stories. With original artwork and animations, all of the stories came to life.

PROJECT 2 - BR FIT

Southeast DATA students are taking fitness to the next level. Each grade has a different topic they are researching that relate to a healthy lifestyle. From exercise and nutrition to diseases, all of the students are learning what it means to be healthy. So far we have had 2 of our very own fitness sessions at school as well as brainstorm different needs to create a school wide fitness challenge. On Saturday, December 1, Southeast DATA will be hosting our very first walk/run. The community is invited to join the students as they pledge to walk/run a mile together to raise awareness for healthy living. More information is to come.

PROJECT 3 - STEM INVENTIONS

During the 3rd 9 weeks, DATA students are using their grade level social studies content to invent and build prototypes to be a solution to different problems in history. They will research and gain knowledge of their topics and come up with a way that could have helped during difficult times. Students will work in groups to research, invent, build, test, and present.  Project Night: March 21, 2019 from 6:00PM to 7:00 PM at Southeast Middle Magnet
